Dafydd ap Gwilym: the poems
Loomis Richard Morgan (translation and commentary). — Binghamton, N.Y.: Center for Medieval & Early Renaissance Studies, 1982. — 350 p. — (Medieval and Renaissance Texts and Studies 9).
Dafydd ap Gwilym is a poet of fourteenth-century Wales who has come to be recognized as one of the great lyric poets of medieval literature.
The modern critical edition of the work of Dafydd ap Gwilym (Gwaith Dafydd ap Gwilym) appeared in 1952, edited by Sir Thomas Parry; a second edition was issued in 1963, and a third, in 1979; all were published by the University of Wales Press. In the introduction to his first edition, Dr. Parry lists 267 manuscripts which he examined and collated over a period of more than two decades; in these manuscripts some 358 compositions are ascribed to Dafydd. The Parry edition presents a total of 150 poems as by Dafydd, together with twenty poems of doubtful authorship, eight poems by contemporaries of Dafydd (four are part of a debate with Dafydd, four are elegies), and two elegiac stanzas on Dafydd.
