Thompson Laurence Cassius. A Vietnamese reference grammar
Honolulu: University of Hawaii Press, 2009. — 409 p.
Following Studies in Vietnamese (Annamese) Grammar [1951], Professor Murray B. Emeneau's seminal work-a product of the wartime Army Specialized Training Course, 1943-1944-American linguists showed increasing interest in the language of Vietnam through academic courses offered for the first time in the 1950's at such universities as Cornell, Columbia, Yale and Georgetown, and also at the Foreign Service Institute of the U.S. Department of State. His industriousness and ingenuity have resulted in A Vietnamese Grammar (University of Washington Press, 1965), which I know immensely pleased him as a descriptivist-structuralist. The discipline also owes him several articles and essays, all of which evidenced his rigorous methodology, his deep concern with backing up theoretical considerations with the real pragmatics of communcation as well as his many insights into "Ianguage-in-culture" contexts. We are now grateful to the University of Hawaii at Manoa for an overdue reprint edition of this excellent reference grammar.
