Rājavāḍe published his text of the Jñāneśvarī in 1909 as based on a manuscript which he found at Biḍa and which he claimed as written almost immediately after the passing away of Jñānadeva in 1296. It was thus from his point of view an invaluable document on which to base a study of Old Marāṭhī. Accordingly, he wrote a long Introduction to his edition of the Jñāneśvarī taking a survey of the history of the Marāṭhī language on the basis of the source-material consisting of inscriptional and other records. [...] along with his edition of the Jñāneśvarī Rājavāḍe also published his “Grammar of the Marāṭhī language of the Jñāneśvarī” (1909) which could claim to
be the first Historical Grammar of Marāṭhī. [...] The Government of Mahārāṣṭra brought out a revised reprint of Rājavāḍe’s edition of the Jñāneśvarī in 1960 but unfortunately without his Introduction being included in it. His Grammar of the Marāṭhī language of the Jñāneśvarī was also out of print for the past several years. It is with the intention, therefore, to make available these two valuable works of Rājavāḍe to the scholars of the Marāṭhī language that the present edition of the same is being published. While doing so care has been taken to provide Rājavāḍe’s writings with necessary foot-notes, indices and other aids of study in which they miserably lack. An Introduction bringing out the salient features of Rājavāḍe’s present works is prefixed.
