In the present book I have made an attempt, however modest, to approach the study of Irish proverbs from the historic and comparative points of view. Its principal contents are, first, the proverbs noted by Mícheál Og Ó Longain about the year 1800, and, secondly, a selection of proverbs and proverbial phrases drawn from the literature of the preceding thousand years. I have added an English translation in every case.
