Otto Donner ( December 15, 1835 in Gamlakarleby – September 17, 1909 in Helsingfors ) was a Finnish-Swedish linguist . From 1875 until his death he was a professor at the University of Helsinki and in 1883 he was instrumental in founding the Finnish-Ugric Society . Despite his Swedish mother tongue , Donner was a supporter of the so-called Fennomania , which campaigned for the development of Finnish as the national language.
