本教材的编写目的和要求是：使初学者掌握印地语的基本语音、基本语法和约4000个常用词汇；培养学生听说读写译的初步能力，为进一步提高印地语水平打下坚实基础。
本教材由北京大学东方语言文学系印度语言文化教研室的同志们负责编写。This set of "Basic Hindi Courses" consists of four volumes, which are used for the first and second academic years of Hindi undergraduates in colleges and universities, and each volume is used for one semester.
The purpose and requirements of this textbook are: to enable beginners to master the basic pronunciation, basic grammar and about 4000 common vocabulary of Hindi; to cultivate students' preliminary ability of listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation, and laying a solid foundation for further improvement of Hindi.
This textbook is compiled by the comrades of the Indian Language and Culture Teaching and Research Section of the Department of Oriental Languages and Literatures of Peking University.
