exclusively to sattukku texts dated from the reign of Lipit-Enlil of Isin to that
of Rim-Sin of Larsa. All tablets mentioned sa-du, usually translated as
"regular offerings" or "deliveries," a practice combining ritual and economic
aspects of urban life; comestables, including breads, wine and beer, were offered
to the gods and thereafter distributed to temple personnel as well as to the
people of Nippur.
After a brief discussion of the archaeological and chronological data, the
tablets are analyzed typologically and ordered by year. The Nippur pantheon
is examined, with attention to those rations distributed to each god, and the
temple structure, its personnel and cultic objects are discussed. Various translations
and meanings of sattukku are reviewed beginning with the first evidence
in presargonic Lagas through the Old Babylonion period.
