His work on the Skeireins, which took him to the Ambrosian and Vatican libraries, occupied him for many years and resulted in the publication of several definitive studies, including this book: The Gothic Commentary on the Gospel of St. John: Skeireins Aiwaggeljons þairh Iohannen.
Professor Bennett, rejecting the entire mass of accumulated conjectural emendations, which he estimated at about 1500, presents a diplomatic transcript of the the Milan and Vatican leaves of the Skeireins, without deviating by one jot or tittle from the manuscript text as it left of the scribe and his corrector.
The transcript is based on a renewed scrutiny of the eight leaves under daylight, under ultra-violet radiation, and means of the photographic reproduction. All readings are incorporated in the critical apparatus appended to printed text, which includes “all readings of the codex and all emendations that have been used or proposed”.
