Expedition of the British Museum and of the University
Museum, University of Pennsylvania, at Ur contains texts of two
kinds, one group belonging to the period preceding the time of
the First Dynasty of Ur, and the other to the period preceding the
Agade dynasty. They are accounts, lists of objects and other
documents connected with temple business or schools. They were
found during the seasons 1926 to I934.
This volume, which contains an explanatory introduction,
and lists that are a contribution to the palaeographical study of
the texts and to their interpretation, is the work of Father Eric
Burrows, S.J., M.A., of Campion Hall, Oxford. Mr. C. J. Gadd,
of the Department of Egyptian and Assyrian Antiquities at the
British Museum, has acted as editor.
This volume contains principally a collection of archaic documents
(No. I-No. 373) found beneath the "Royal Cemetery" of Ur. They are
intermediate in character between the collections of Jemdet Nasr and Fara. As
a supplement are added various other early documents from Ur of the period
Fara-Agade (Supp. No. I-No. 52).
