Oxford University Press, 1905 . — 200 p. — (Catalogue général des antiquités égyptiennes du Musée du Caire).The Catalogue of Greek and Roman Inscriptions was mainly
prepared in the winter of 1899. Various circumstances prevented
its being printed for some time after that date : and in the meantime
so many additions and alterations had become necessary, that
it seemed most (Convenient to forsake the original plan of giving the
inscriptions in the order of the numbers assigned to them, and to
re-arrange the Catalogue under classified headings. So far as
regards the numbers, it is hoped that the Table prefixed to the
Catalogue will make it easy to find any inscription.
A further complication has been introduced by the decision that
certain bilingual inscriptions, which were originally excluded from
the scope of this Catalogue, should be inserted so far as regards
their Greek or Latin texts : and that the inscriptions on a number
of stelae, which have been specially described in the Catalogue of
Greek Sculpture, should for the sake of completeness be noticed.
These inscriptions have been placed under the numbers assigned
to them in the volumes for which they were first catalogued.
Certain stelae, however, which were included in this Catalogue
before that of Greek Sculpture was planned, have been retained
under their original numbers ; the illustrations of these stelae are
also in this volume, and fuller descriptions of the scenes represented
upon them have been left in the text.
A few monuments, which were catalogued in 1899, were transferred
to the Alexandria Museum during the removal of the collections
from Gizeh to Cairo. A list of these is given in an Appendix, as
certain references have been made to them in published articles
under the numbers assigned in 1899.
