London: The Oriental Literature Society, 1861. — 827 p.Полное название "A Lexicon, English and Turkish shewing in Turkish, the Literal, Incidental, Figurative, Colloquial and Technical Significations of the English Terms, indicating their Pronunciation in a new and Systematic Manner; and preceded by a Sketch of English Etymology to facilitate to Turkish Students, the acquisition of the English Language".It was felt, however, that, although the Anglo-Turkish Dictionary was a material after immediate help to the attainment of the object, a more complete Lexicon was wanted, the English-Turkish part of which should be specially compiled to give to Turkish students as many facilities as possible for learning the pronunciation of English words, and also for distinguishing accurately their various meanings, as used in the literal, figurative, or technical sense, with explanations of the nature of English compound terms, and familiar or proverbial expressions. An English Spelling and First Readiflg Book, together with an English Grammar, in Turkish, ns also a Book of dialogues in the two languages, were at the same time admitted to be requisite. The expense of preparing and publishing these vartous works was; it once seen to be very considerable; while, to all appemances, a certain space of time must necessarily elapse ere the requisite funds could be colleered. Some progress had, indeed, been made in obtaining promises of support to the work; then, unexpectedly, all further exertion for that purpose was rendered unnecessary, by the munificent offer on the part of one sole individual, an American merchant usually residing in London, to bea$ the whole expense. The Spelling-Book and the Dialogues, having thereupon been speedily prepared and printed in London, were sent to Constantinople to be put in use. The Grammar was undertaken in that capital; while the preparation of the English-Turkish Lexicon, already commenced, was thenceforward steadily worked at, and is now submitted to the public, its total contents amounting to 47,000 words, preceded by a short sketch of English Etymology.
