Patrick George Z. Roots of the Russian Language
Chicago: NTC, 1981. — 239 p.
Based on the supposition that familiarity and practice with the component elements of Russian words will facilitate student comprehension and learning, Roots of the Russian Language includes four hundred and fifty of the most commonly used roots of the Russian language in a convenient, reference format. Mastery of these roots should enable students to form many more derivatives, increasing their Russian vocabularies, as well as enhancing their enjoyment and satisfaction in learning the Russian language. Once students achieve an understanding and mastery of the basic Russian suffixes and prefixes, they will be able to recognize, identify, and decipher words into their component parts. With this skill established, they should also develop an ability to construct many words and terms from a given Russian root, facilitating both the translation of Russian literature and student conversation and composition. The phrases that follow the derivatives and compounds in this book are designed to illustrate the proper use of the given word in a realistic sentence. In addition, "Exercises for Practice" is intended to furnish more extended practice in word-building. Roots of the Russian Language provides students with the opportunity to acquire a comprehensive knowledge of word-building and vocabulary enrichment in the Russian language.
