Josephson Judith. The Pahlavi translation technique as illustrated by Hōm Yašt
Uppsala: Acta Uni. Ups., 1997. — 214 p. — (Studia Iranica Upsaliensia 2).
The present work is a very interesting study of how the Phl. translators of Avestan texts worked when transferring Av. categories of grammar into Pahlavi. As a textual basis J. Josephson uses the Hom Yast. After an introduction with a review of previous research in chapter I, chapter II contains the transliteration of the Phl. text, and chapter III contrasts the Av. text with its Phl. translation verse by verse, describing in detail the translation process. In the extant manuscripts the Phl. translations are always found together with the original Av. text which they translate. The Phl. version is inserted after the group of words it translates together with any glosses or comments relating to the segment. In most cases the Phl. translation interrupts the Av. text at the end of a syntactic unit, such as a sentence, a clause or a noun phrase or a prepositional phrase. The text given in chapter III follows the translators segmentation, showing exactly where the Phl. version has been inserted. Both the Av. and the Phl. version are translated into English segment by segment.
