Trümpy Catherine. Untersuchungen zu den altgriechischen Monatsnamen und Monatsfolgen
Heidelberg: Universitätsverlag C. Winter, 1997. — xv, 300 p. — (Bibliothek der klassischen Altertumswissenschaften; n.F., 2. Reihe, Bd. 98).
In ancient times practically each polis gave its own name to the twelve months, so there was a plethora of month names in Greece (about 150). This book proceeds to the systematic analysis of this rather dispersed material and shows that a) some names appear in different localities, but are unknown in other places, which suggests certain conclusions on the early diffusion of tribal groups; b) many calendars could only be partly reconstructed so far, but using the historical-comparative method it is now possible to restitute the sequence of the months and to reconstruct many calendars more plausibly and accurately; c) in definite cases, the etymology of some month names can be given; d) the old calendar of festivals can be better understood, as practically all months are named after these festivals. In her introduction the author lists earlier literature, specifies the purpose of her study and gives preliminaries about it; then, she turns to the Ionian calendar, analyzing its system and its variants in different cities. Next, she proceeds in the same way with the Dorian, N.W. Greek, Thessalian, Boeotian, Lesbian. Arcadian, Macedonian, etc. calendars, paying special attention to the twelve gods calendar. In an appendix, she surveys calendars on the rim of the Hellenic world (Near East, Sicily), and closes with considerations on the regrouping of the calendars and on the names of festivals and months. The book contains multiple indices (names of months and festivals, locations, index rerum).
