The present edition of "Classification of South American Indian Languages," is the final version of this work by the late Čestmír Loukotka. Before entering into a detailed description of the same it might, therefore, prove useful to recapitulate some of the developments that have influenced Loukotka's work throughout the thirty years of his classificatory efforts. By doing so we might arrive at a better appreciation of the contribution this work represents.
