Master Alfred. A grammar of Old Marathi

Oxford 1964. ― 172 p.Since the publication of ʽLa formation de la langue marathe’ by Jules Bloch in 1914 and of ‘The Grammar of the Jñāneśvarī’ by W. Doderet, together with some other articles in the Bulletin of the School of Oriental (and African) Studies, little has been written on Marathi, particularly old Marathi, except in Marathi publications. A welcome exception is M. C. Panse’s Linguistic Peculiarities of the Jñāneśvarī, published in 1953, with a full and instructive Index Verborum and the text of Adhyāya V of the MS. Vipra 1. He worked solely on this text and confines himself for the most part to the philological and morphological classification of examples from his Index, with a minimum of analysis. Harṣe’s edition of Adhyāya I from the same manuscript published in 1947 is in Marathi and has a good critical apparatus, besides much valuable information on the many manuscripts available and a vocabulary of early inscriptions.
