Quin E.G. Old-Irish Workbook
Royal Irish Academy, 1992. — 165 p. — ISBN: 0-901714-08-9.
This book is intended as a companion to John Strachan's Old-Irish paradigms and selections from the old-Irish glosses (fourth edition revised by Osborn Bergin, 1949), to which reference should be made throughout. Rudolph Thurneysen's Gramrnar of old Irish (1946) is the standard complete work, and the learner who requires further information (for I have omitted much) should consult this. I have also included references to - Julius Pokorny's Altirische Grammatilc (Sammlung Goeschen, 1969), which gives the facts in extremely concise form.
Each lesson begins with a short grammatical explanation, but most of the forms should be sought in Strachan and/or the other two works. This is followed by twenty sentences for translation out of old Irish and twenty for translation into old Irish. For the latter a key is provided. The two sets of sentences use the same vocabulary, only the grammar being different. Most of the words used will be found in Strachan.
Each of the first twelve lessons includes a section called 'Suggested pronunciation'. This is introduced and explained in the Reading Rules.
Abbreviations of grammatical terms are as in Strachan.
It is very advisable, before using Strachan, to enter up the corrigenda given there on p. 217, together with those here on p. 165.
