This book has been written to provide an introduction to those parts of physical electronics which are currently of most interest to electronic engineers and physicists. The level we have aimed at is that of the second- and third-year University courses in electronic engineering, and the examinations of the Institute of Physics, the Institute of Electrical Engineers, the Institute of Electronic and Radio Engineers, Higher National Certificate in Applied Physics, etc. However, when we have been forced to choose between giving a purely descriptive account of some subject or of making the level a little higher than is today common in the relevant teaching, we have usually chosen the latter course. The content of electronics is expanding very fast and we are sure that this was the only realistic policy.
