This book contains a Roman transliteration of the first half of the Sanskrit readings in Charles R. Lanman's
A Sanskrit Reader: Text Vocabulary and Notes, 1884. The texts include the first five chapters of the Nala episode from the Mahābhārata, together with the preface and nineteen fables of the Hitopadeça. The system of transliteration coincides with that used by Whitney in his
Sanskrit Grammar and used by Lanman in the glossary and notes of the reader. The vocabulary and notes of the reader apply exactly also to this version of the text inasmuch as it corresponds page for page and line for line with its original devanāgarī text.
