Reading Selection. In each lesson, the reading selection occupies the position of central importance. In the first sixteen lessons, an average of twenty lines of simple prose has been prepared by the authors. It contains examples of points of grammar and words to be learned. Beginning with words describing objects encountered in the class-room, the student moves into familiar situations such as school routines, day-to-day routines, discussion of sports, theatre-going, visiting. Story themes have been chosen to help create interest in learning the language as a means of discovering points of similarity and difference between the lives of English-speaking peoples and Russians. The content of the reading selections increases in length and complexity as the students’ vocabulary increases. In lessons seventeen to forty the reading selections are enhanced by material from Russian literature derived from classic sources, and, in part, from inoffensive Soviet sources.
New Vocabulary. Some lessons are followed by remarks on word building to show how new words are built from known roots. For greater clarity of exposition, new expressions and idioms are treated separately.
Grammatical Exposition. A brief and simple expose of grammatical points, with examples, is given in each
lesson. Neat tables are included where necessary. In the grammar section the authors have sought to combine simplicity with completeness of presentation
Exercises. The exercises are based on the reading selections in each lesson and comprise the following:
Pronunciation. Each lesson contains an exercise in pronunciation dealing with endings and forms studied in the lesson Constant reference is made to the introductory lesson on pronunciation to help the student acquire correct pronunciation of the words studied.
Grammatical drills. These drills involve filling blanks, inflecting the noun and verb, pluralization, etc.
Question and answer exercises, in dialogue form, are related to each reading selection.
Dictation. The reading selection affords numerous examples of the forms and rules studied in the lesson. Accordingly, the reading selection is a useful source of dictation exercises.
Translations from English into Russian. These exercises encourage review of previous material studied. The translations are made up largely of words and forms covered in earlier lessons. Frequent cross-references help the student place new facts in relation to those already learned.
