Birnbaum tackled Yiddish and began his studies in 1912 in years when many immigrant Jews might have spoken it at home and with family, but whose children could not forget it quickly enough. During the 65 or so years that followed his initial efforts, Yiddish studies began to gain a following. This "grandmaster" of Yiddish linguistics passed away in December of 1989 at the age of 98.
